Princess of Wales surprises fans in Wimbledon queue

The Princess of Wales greeted tennis enthusiasts who had queued for hours to secure tickets for Wimbledon on the fourth day of the tournament. She engaged with hopeful attendees who had waited outside the renowned sports ground from early in the morning to gain entry to the championships.

Wearing a blue linen suit, Kate conversed with fans and later joined stewards to assist in processing payments and distributing tickets to those who successfully gained admission after their wait. She encouraged two tennis fans to “have a great time” as she handed them their tickets on Thursday morning.

During her time in the queue, the Princess was observed smiling and laughing as she greeted visitors and posed for photographs. She also spoke with two children, asking if they were avid tennis fans, to which they responded with smiles and nods. One attendee congratulated her on her recent Three Peaks challenge.

Engagement with Volunteers and Young Photographers

The Princess of Wales also interacted with honorary stewards, who volunteer annually to manage the busy queue. Onlookers paused to capture images as Kate entered the grounds of the famous sports venue. As patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), she is a regular presence at Wimbledon.

Her attendance this year carried particular significance, occurring shortly after she completed the National Three Peaks Challenge and spoke about exploring life beyond a diagnosis. The Princess was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and made her second public appearance following her diagnosis at the championships that year. She confirmed she was free from the disease at the start of 2025.

Upon entering the grounds, Kate was met with applause and cheers as she walked past Henman Hill, waving to spectators. She then proceeded to Court 18 to watch Briton Arthur Fery compete in his second-round match against Finnish Otto Virtanen. She was seated alongside Deborah Jevans, chairwoman of the AELTC, and former professional player Tim Henman.

The Princess also dedicated time to meet with children from the local Shine Camera Club, an initiative that supports children from disadvantaged backgrounds in developing confidence, creativity, and self-expression through photography. The children presented Kate with Polaroid pictures they had taken around the Wimbledon grounds. She praised one child’s photograph of a tree, describing it as “abstract” and expressing, “I love that.”

Discussing the importance of photography and the arts with the group, she remarked, “Creativity is such a good way of exploring your emotions.”

Wimbledon Wardrobe and Past Appearances

The Princess of Wales has been a consistent attendee at Wimbledon, making her first appearance in the Royal Box in 2011. Her well-documented affinity for the sport has solidified her reputation as one of the tournament’s most prominent regulars. Her arrival at the competition is not unexpected, given her role as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

This year, Kate chose an amply cut, breezy double-breasted suit in periwinkle-blue wool. The suit’s peak lapels provided a formal touch, balanced by its relaxed styling, with the jacket worn open over a simple ribbed white crew-neck T-shirt. This bold colour choice follows a series of more extroverted looks from the royal, including a sunshine-yellow ensemble worn at Royal Ascot just two weeks prior.

Her Wimbledon wardrobe typically falls into several categories: those that reference tennis whites, polka dots, Wimbledon greens, and wildcard selections. Last year, her look was inspired by tennis whites, featuring a belted jacket and plissé skirt. This year’s choice marks a return to her wildcard territory.

Last year, she presented the men’s trophy to world number one Jannik Sinner after observing the singles final on Centre Court with the Prince of Wales.
